A lover of truth for Alabama Chief Justice
by Fr. Daniel Sparks ~ May 13, 2006. Filed under: Liberty & Society.I’ve written before of Alabama Supreme Court Associate Justice Tom Parker. In May 2004, I interviewed him for an article about his campaign for Supreme Court justice. And, in January 2005, I attended his investiture ceremony, where he delivered a speech describing his duty before God.
Justice Parker is currently campaigning for the seat of Chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court. I strongly endorse his election. He has repeatedly and consistently shown his desire to live according to the principles of God; he has limited himself as a judge to the proper authority of his office, refusing to usurp the responsibilities of the state or of the people and always submitting his opinions to the judgements of the Supreme Judge of the universe.
I encourage you to read the two articles linked below to find out more about this man. His commitment to the rule of law, the integrity of the justice system, and the truth of God Almighty make him a refreshing figure in today’s jurisprudence. He can be counted on to do the right thing, no matter what any other judge or court declares–he can be counted on to do the right thing in the eyes of God.
Parker knows from whence comes the authority to govern. He recognizes the same source of authority that the state constitution names: “Our constitution sets out God as the foundation for our judicial system. I cannot be faithful to our constitution [without recognizing] God as the One whose favor and guidance was invoked in the establishment of the state judicial system, as expressly set forth in the preamble of the Constitution of Alabama of 1901.”
On June 6, Alabamians have the opportunity to elect a godly judge as chief justice. Creation groans for justice as God has ordered it; let us do our part to obey God’s command to establish justice.
