The vestry of Prince Frederick’s Parish fired its rector in 1756 because the Rev. Michael Smith, who apparently already was married, claimed he had the power to marry himself to another woman without the intervention of a third party. The last straw was when Smith defended himself by posting on the church door what the vestry called “A Scandalous & Libertine Paper in Justification of Fornication, from Scripture.”
